Who we are

MySanthiya is an online tool for learning the Gurmukhi script. This privacy policy explains what data we hold, why we hold it, and your rights over it under UK data protection law (UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018). For any privacy-related query, contact us at info@mysanthiya.com.

Using MySanthiya without an account

The Akhar and Muharni learning tools and their quizzes are free to use and require no account. If you use the site this way, we do not collect any personal data that identifies you. Your quiz answers and practice are handled in your browser and are not linked to any identity.

What data we collect

We only hold personal data for registered users (students, teachers and administrators). Accounts are created by a teacher or administrator — there is no public self–sign-up. For a registered account we hold:

We do not collect payment details, medical information, home addresses, or any special category data.

Microphone and speech recognition

The Kavishri recitation practice asks the learner to recite a passage aloud so the site can check it. To do this, the learner's web browser uses its built-in speech-recognition feature, which needs access to the device microphone (the browser will ask permission first).

Importantly, this speech recognition is performed by the browser, not by MySanthiya. In some browsers — notably Google Chrome and Chrome on Android — the captured audio is sent to the browser maker's servers (Google) to be converted into text. This processing is governed by that browser maker's own privacy policy, not ours. MySanthiya never receives or stores the audio recording; we only receive the recognised text in the browser to score the recitation, and we save only the resulting pass/fail and score against the learner's progress.

This practice is optional. If you would prefer a child not use microphone-based practice, they can simply not use the Kavishri recitation quiz, or use a browser that performs recognition on the device. Headphones and a quiet space are recommended.

Why we collect it

We use this data solely to operate the learning service:

Our lawful basis under UK GDPR is legitimate interests in providing and improving the learning service, and consent given by the parent, guardian, teacher or administrator who sets up an account.

Children's data

MySanthiya is used by children. Student accounts may be created by a teacher or administrator, or submitted for approval through student registration. A Vidyala administrator reviews student registrations before access is enabled. A student's data is visible only to that student, to the teacher whose class they belong to, and to administrators. It is never sold or shared with third parties for marketing or commercial purposes.

Where an account is set up for a child, we rely on the consent of the parent, guardian, teacher or administrator who creates or approves it. We encourage parents and guardians to read the "Microphone and speech recognition" section above before a child uses the Kavishri recitation practice.

If you are a parent or guardian and want a child's account and data removed, contact us at info@mysanthiya.com or ask the child's teacher, and we will delete it.

The leaderboard

Registered students appear on course points leaderboards visible to other signed-in learners. Students can see names for learners in their own Vidyala. Learners from other Vidyalas are shown as private entries with their Vidyala and points total. Vidyala leaderboards show school location, total points and average points per student. If you would prefer not to appear, contact us and we can remove you.

Where your data is stored

Account and progress data is stored using Supabase, a hosting provider that processes data on our behalf. Data is transmitted over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection. Access to the database is restricted, and one user cannot read another user's personal data.

How long we keep your data

We keep account and progress data for as long as the account is active. When an account is deleted by an administrator — or at your request — the account and its associated progress, points and certificates are permanently removed.

Your rights

Under UK GDPR you have the right to:

To exercise any of these rights, contact info@mysanthiya.com and we will respond within 30 days.

Security

The site runs entirely over HTTPS. Passwords are stored in hashed form by our authentication provider and are never visible to us. Access to each user's data is restricted at the database level so that learners can only see their own information.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Any changes will be published on this page with a revised date at the top.
